- Wonderful Evening at Hospice of Shelby County Spring Fling
The 6th Annual Hospice of Shelby County Spring Fling was held on March 13th, 2010 at Occasions in Shelbyville with over 230 people attending the event. “As the new patient care coordinator for Hospice of Shelby County, this was my first time to attend this wonderful event,” said Kelly Niehoff. “I was so impressed with how the community came together to support the Spring Fling and the queen contestants with their attendance and financial contributions.”
A highlight of the evening was the crowning of Heidi Hensley and Emily Wolfe as this year’s queens. The students, who represented Waldron High School, ran as a team, as did all of the contestants. Julia Polston, who attends Triton Central High School, was named Miss Congeniality. The other contestants wereStephanie DeJong and Lindsey Reed, who attend Morristown High School; Erika Engle and Amye Mitchell, who attend Shelbyville High School; Alanah Manning and Jennefer Gore, who attend Southwestern High School; and Jenna Clark, who also attends Triton Central High School. Each contestant received a United States Savings Bond.
“All of the contestants did a great job this year to raise money for our patients and families,” stated Sheryl Tracey, Manager of Fund Development & Special Events for Hospice of South Central Indiana, Inc. “Thanks to all those who supported the event, the Spring Fling made nearly $18,000 this year. The queen contestants collected over $10,000. All of the girls’ efforts in a down economy were outstanding, and they well represent their schools. We are confident they will be successful in any career path they choose.”
Jeff Kunkel provided music during the social hour and dinner, while John R. Scott donated his skills as auctioneer for the live auction. Crystal Anderson, of Studio Limelight, took photos throughout the evening.
Hospice of Shelby County, which is an office of Hospice of South Central Indiana, Inc., provides a full range of services that address the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of terminally ill patients and their families, regardless of their ability to pay. Over 330 people attended the event that featured dinner, dancing, and a silent and live auction. The gala raised over $30,000 to benefit the patients and families served by Hospice of Jennings County. The culmination of the evening was the crowning of 2010’s Queen, Molly Knight. Other Jennings County High School contestants included, Jessica Boyd, Amber Cooper, Kayla Ellis, Olivia Euler, Linda Greathouse, Genalea Hembree, Cheyenne Howard, Macy Morrison, Kristin O’Connor, Brooke Reed, Morgan Siener and Hillary Simmons. “This year’s Queen Contestants raised a little over $22,000, which is second highest ever raised by a group of girls.” stated Carla Mills, Fund Development Specialist for Hospice, who worked with the contestants this year. “What an achievement for these outstanding young women, especially in this down economy. Molly Knight, our 2010 Queen, single handedly raised $8,000 of that total.”
Many local individuals and businesses graciously donated their services and products to help make the gala a success, including Tom Lawson who conducted the live auction and Stan Guljas who served as DJ for the dance. The Jennings County High School Jazz Band provided dinner music again this year and Jennings County Touch of Class Dance Group performed for the first time and were amazing! Crystal Anderson with Anderson Photography took pictures throughout the evening. “Without the generous support of the community and Queen Contestants, we would not be able to have this event” said Betty Pettit, Patient Care Coordinator for Hospice of Jennings County. “We are so blessed to have so many individuals helping us.”
